2016 Mondial Basketball Cholet, Stellazzurra Academy on the second step of the podium of U19M French tournament

Pubblicato il Giovedì 31 Marzo 2016 - Tournaments and Experiences

The U19 Stellazzurra Basketball Academy men team were almost crowned champions in the 2016 Mondial Basketball 2016 tournament in Cholet, France. In the all-Italian Final PMS Moncalieri managed to beat Germano D’Arcangeli’s team taking it 62-60 with a buzzer beater by Marko Simonovic.

Stellazzurra were down 11 points at the end of the third quarter (34-45), but in the fourth quarter with three minutes on the clock they were able to tie the game for the first time (52-52) and a second time with 27” to go, both times thanks to 1999-born point-guard Emanuele Trapani. However, the team from Piedmont, led by coach Squarcina, took control and succeeded to score the winner shot. This awarded them first place on the podium, succeeding last year’s winner GBA Prague.

The Stellazzurra side ends the third quarter badly, with 6 points to the opponents 17, while in the final ten minutes 26 points were reported. The dominating statistics on rebounds (38-25) were not enough either, with 20 balls won under the oppositions basket.

Captain Todor Radonjic (in the pic) ends the game as best scorer and the team's most valuable player, scoring 16 points in over 38 minutes, 9 rebounds (6 offensive) and 5 steals, Trapani scored 15 in 23 minutes, Donato Vitale 9, while Babacar Seye just missed out on double figures with 8 points and 9 rebounds.

The Stellazzurra Basketball Academy concludes the tournament in 2nd place, improving last years ranking of 3rd place, winning 4 games out of 5. On Friday (the only games which had 4 quarters of 8 minutes) they were able to beat the defending champions GBA Prague (60-59) and the French side Chorale Roanne Basket (55-34) that allowed them to proceed to the quarter-finals, this was scheduled for Saturday against Hyeres Toulon Var Basket (66-60) and the semi-final took place on Easter Sunday where they beat IBA Munich (76-58).

As well as Stellazzurra achieving 2nd place, Mattia Da Campo was chosen as one of the best five players of the tournament (in the pic).
