Stellazzurra Academy in first place after Stage 1 of new U16M EYBL season in St. Petersburg

 Stellazzurra Basketball Academy made its debut in the 2015/16 U16M EYBL, playing the first stage last weekend in St. Petersburg, Russia. The team led by Lorenzo Gandolfi started off well beating three Estonian opponents, Tartu Rock by 75-43, Tallinn Kalev 82-53 and Keila KK 65-55, and Wartti Basket Helsinki from Finland taking it 72-69, losing only the last game against the host team Kalininskaya San Pietroburgo by 58-63.

 

The four wins allowed Stellazzurra Academy to close the first stage of the European Youth Basketball League in first place, with 8 points. The Polish side Trefl Sopot, who finished the stage with the same points, is inserted into Group B with Stellazzurra, as well as Kalininskaya, finishing with 6 points, and the other Polish team Hensfort Przemysl, who finished without a win in Russia. Aside from the teams success, the Stellazzurra's player Mattia Palumbo (last photo below) receives the tournament MVP award, repeating his personal best obtained at “La Orotava” tournament at the end of September in the Canary Islands, Spain.

 

After the St. Petersburg adventure concluded, embellished by an unforgetable visit to the Hermitage, one of the most visited art museums in the world, Stellazzurra – sponsored by Orange1 Group and tMollificio Bordignon for the EYBL season – is scheduled to play the second stage of the EYBL from the 21-24 January in Sopot, Poland.
